If there were awards for the most underrated city in the world, Budapest would take the crown in my heart. I remember growing up, tracing the world map with my fingers, dreaming of visiting every city I had ever heard of or seen online. But Budapest? It never even crossed my mind.
I remember my grandfather telling me he had never visited a city more beautiful than Budapest. So when the opportunity finally came, I found myself wandering through the most dreamlike streets I could have ever imagined.
Budapest has become a popular location for filmmakers in recent years, attracting a number of international productions. During my visit, I came across a scene being filmed for a movie starring John Cena. With its impressive architecture and distinctive atmosphere, the city provides a naturally compelling backdrop for the big screen.
Over the course of a few unforgettable days in Budapest, I discovered places that made the city feel truly extraordinary. If you're planning a visit, these are the spots you won’t want to miss.
Fisherman’s Bastion & Buda Castle – A Step Back in Time
Start your exploration of Budapest with the Fisherman’s Bastion - an architectural gem that feels lifted from the pages of a storybook. Its terraces offer some of the most captivating views of the city. Just moments away, Buda Castle rises in timeless grandeur, inviting visitors to step into Hungary’s rich history while admiring its remarkable design.
St. Stephen’s Basilica & The Holocaust Memorial – A Mix of Beauty and Reflection
Among Budapest’s most iconic landmarks, St. Stephen’s Basilica stands out for its grandeur and elegance. Its richly adorned interior is a sight to behold, while the panoramic view from the dome offers a truly memorable perspective of the city.
For a more contemplative experience, visit the Shoes on the Danube Bank - a poignant memorial honoring the victims of the Holocaust. Simple yet deeply moving, it stands as a powerful reminder of the city’s history and invites a quiet moment of reflection.
Thermal Baths & Sparty – Relaxation and Nightlife Combined
Budapest is renowned for its thermal baths - a quintessential part of the city’s charm and an ideal way to relax after a day of sightseeing. The Széchenyi Thermal Bath, with its grand neo-baroque architecture and steaming outdoor pools, offers a truly indulgent experience, especially in the colder months. For something with a bit more energy, there’s Sparty - Budapest’s iconic thermal bath party, where music, lights, and warm waters come together for an unforgettable night.
Imagine neon lights, DJs, and an open-air spa experience all in one. It’s a must for anyone looking to experience Budapest’s nightlife in a truly unforgettable way.
Monet’s Exhibition – A Dream for Art Lovers
This exhibition goes beyond showcasing Monet’s paintings - it offers an immersive journey into his world. Thoughtfully designed installations evoke the atmosphere of his home in Giverny, making visitors feel as though they’ve stepped into the artist’s daily life. The highlight is the 3D experience, where you can quite literally walk into Monet’s masterpieces and feel like a part of his timeless landscapes.
Having visited Monet’s actual home near Paris, I can say that this exhibition offers something uniquely magical - an interactive glimpse into his masterpieces.
A Boat Trip to See Parliament at Night
If there’s one experience not to miss in Budapest, it’s a nighttime boat ride along the Danube River. The sight of the illuminated Hungarian Parliament Building is truly mesmerizing, and the city lights dancing on the water create a view that stays with you long after the journey ends.
Harry Potter Magic Café & Pirate Café – Fantasy in the Heart of Budapest
For fans of themed experiences, Budapest is home to two standout cafés that offer far more than just coffee. The Harry Potter Magic Café is a dream destination for Potterheads, drawing visitors into the wizarding world with enchanting décor, imaginative drinks, and a spellbinding atmosphere reminiscent of Hogwarts. The menu features a variety of themed delights, but the star is their signature trio of mini black-bun burgers - each with its own unique flavor, making for a meal that’s as visually captivating as it is delicious.
Meanwhile, the Pirate Café is another must-visit and perfect for those in search of something a little more offbeat. With its ship-inspired interior and adventurous spirit, it offers a fun, immersive setting to enjoy a drink and escape into a playful, nautically themed world. What truly sets both cafés apart is the warm, welcoming staff, whose genuine hospitality adds a personal and memorable touch to the entire experience.
Szimpla Kert – The Legendary Ruin Bar
Even though Szimpla Kert is Budapest’s most famous bar, it is far from a tourist trap. With its eclectic decor, vibrant atmosphere, and live music, it’s a fantastic place to experience the city's nightlife while enjoying a laid-back yet exciting ambiance. Whether you're sipping a cocktail or just taking in the unique setting, Szimpla Kert is a must-visit.
New York Café – A Luxurious Indulgence
For a truly grand experience, visit the iconic New York Café. Known for its stunning, interior and rich history, it offers a glimpse into the elegance of a bygone era. While the prices are on the higher side, the experience of having a coffee in one of the most beautiful cafés in the world is well worth it.
