Princess Diana’s Revenge Dress Goes to Auction

Princess Diana’s famous black dress, widely known as the “Revenge Dress,” will be auctioned at Sotheby’s New York on December 9. Designed by Christina Stambolian, the dress is estimated to sell for between $150,000 and $300,000.

Diana wore the off-the-shoulder black dress on June 29, 1994, to an event at London’s Serpentine Gallery. That same evening, a televised interview aired in which Prince Charles publicly admitted to being unfaithful during their marriage.

The dress stood out from Diana’s more restrained public wardrobe at the time. Following her appearance that evening, it became widely known as the “Revenge Dress.”

Stambolian had designed the dress for Diana several years earlier, but the princess reportedly considered it too daring and did not wear it immediately.

In 1997, Diana sold the dress along with other pieces from her wardrobe at a charity auction. It later remained in private ownership and has since appeared in exhibitions.
