Movies to Watch in September 2026

September opens the fall film season with major sequels, literary adaptations, ambitious international productions and several of the year’s most anticipated performances. From Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s return in Practical Magic 2 to Robert Pattinson’s transformation in Primetime, these are the 10 movies to watch in September 2026.

PRACTICAL MAGIC 2

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens nearly three decades after the original Practical Magic. Directed by Susanne Bier, the sequel also reunites them with Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, while Joey King, Maisie Williams and Lee Pace join the cast. The original film has developed a devoted following since its 1998 release, making this one of the most anticipated sequels of the year. In theaters September 11.

THE UPRISING

Andrew Garfield leads Paul Greengrass’s historical drama about a 14th-century farmer who becomes an unexpected leader of a rebellion against King Richard II. The film examines power, inequality and collective resistance through a large-scale historical conflict. In theaters September 11.

RESIDENT EVIL

Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian and Weapons, presents a new adaptation of the influential survival-horror video-game franchise. Starring Austin Abrams, the film introduces a new story while returning Resident Evil to its horror roots. Cregger’s distinctive approach to suspense makes the project one of the month’s most closely watched genre releases. In theaters September 18.

BAD APPLES

Saoirse Ronan plays a British schoolteacher driven to extreme measures by an exceptionally disruptive student. When the child’s sudden absence improves both the classroom and the teacher’s personal life, she is forced to confront the consequences of her decisions. Adapted from Rasmus Andersson’s novel De Oönskade, the film combines psychological drama with dark comedy. In theaters September 18.

PRIMETIME

Robert Pattinson stars in a psychological crime thriller inspired by the television phenomenon surrounding To Catch a Predator. Set in 2006, the film follows a ratings-driven presenter modeled on Chris Hansen as he pursues cultural relevance through a controversial televised investigation. Directed by Lance Oppenheim, Primetime also stars Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo and Phoebe Bridgers. Following its Venice Film Festival premiere, the film arrives in theaters on September 25.

HEART OF THE BEAST

Brad Pitt plays a former Army Special Forces soldier traveling with his retired combat dog when their plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness. Directed by David Ayer, the survival thriller follows the pair as they confront the landscape and the dangers pursuing them after the crash. In theaters September 25.

MAYDAY

Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh lead this unconventional Cold War comedy from directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Reynolds plays an American pilot shot down over Soviet territory who is rescued by a former KGB agent, portrayed by Branagh. The film combines espionage, survival and comedy. Streaming on Apple TV from September 4.

ONSLAUGHT

Directed by Adam Wingard, Onslaught stars Adria Arjona as a former Army sniper forced to protect her daughter from a rogue unit of genetically engineered soldiers. The film brings science fiction and military action together in a tightly focused survival thriller. In theaters from September 4.
