Before the Mystery Machine: Scooby-Doo’s Chicly Haunting Origin Story Unfolds on Netflix

Netflix is taking a bold step back in time – not just to the late ’60s, when Scooby-Doo first hit Saturday morning television, but to a fictional summer before anyone had heard of Mystery Inc.

The iconic crime-solving crew – Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and of course, Scooby – is getting a live-action reboot. But instead of diving straight into familiar hijinks, the upcoming eight-episode series, produced by Midnight Radio and Berlanti Productions, is turning the lens on how it all began.

Set during a final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, the show introduces Shaggy and Daphne as childhood friends pulled into a chilling mystery involving a lost Great Dane puppy and a possibly supernatural murder. As the case unfolds, they team up with Velma – the townie scientist – and Freddy, the new kid with a dark charm and cryptic past. Together, they become entangled in a haunting that threatens to expose more than just local legends – it threatens to unearth their personal secrets too.

The untitled project comes from Cowboy Bebop duo Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who also serve as showrunners and executive producers. With support from TV heavyweight Greg Berlanti and his long-running partnership with Warner Bros. Television, the series promises more than just nostalgia. It’s a calculated re-entry into the cultural spotlight, framed with mood, mystery, and just the right amount of teen angst.

“Mystery Inc. is back in business,” said Peter Friedlander, VP of Scripted Series at Netflix. “The franchise’s impact on pop culture is undeniable – and this version leans into the universal themes of friendship, fear, and curiosity that have always made it resonate.”

The Scooby-Doo franchise has proved remarkably durable since its 1969 debut, reinventing itself through decades of reboots, spinoffs, and cultural shifts – from A Pup Named Scooby-Doo in the late ’80s to the polarizing, meme-fueled Velma on Max. While animated versions have always led the way, this marks the first time Scooby-Doo makes its debut as a live-action series – a format reserved until now for two early-2000s feature films.

Still, it’s Scooby-Doo – and that means the camp will come, eventually.
