Title: Rupert Grint Is Returning as Ron Weasley After 15 Years

Harry Potter fans have just received one of the biggest casting announcements since the film series ended: Rupert Grint is returning as Ron Weasley after 15 years.

This time, however, the actor will not be returning for a new movie. Grint is joining the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for a strictly limited 17-week engagement at New York’s Lyric Theatre.

His first performance is scheduled for February 2, 2027, and he will remain with the production through May 30. It will be the first time Grint has portrayed Ron since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was released in 2011.

Set 19 years after the events of Deathly Hallows, the play follows Harry, Ron and Hermione as adults and parents. The story centers on a new generation, particularly Harry’s son Albus Severus Potter and Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius, whose attempt to change the past brings unexpected consequences for the wizarding world.

For Grint, returning to the character carries a different meaning at this stage of his life. He was only 11 when he was cast as Ron and grew up while making the eight Harry Potter films. Now both the actor and his character are fathers, allowing him to approach Ron from an entirely new perspective.

Grint will be the second actor from the original film cast to reprise his role in the Broadway production. Tom Felton is currently appearing as Draco Malfoy, but fans hoping to see the two actors together onstage will be disappointed. Felton’s final performance is scheduled for January 3, 2027, one month before Grint’s debut.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in London’s West End in 2016 and arrived on Broadway in 2018. It is the first stage production to continue the story of the original Harry Potter characters while introducing their children and exploring how the events of the past continue to shape their lives.

For the generation that grew up watching the films, Grint’s return offers something entirely new: the opportunity to see the original Ron Weasley not as a Hogwarts student, but as an adult navigating family, friendship and another dangerous chapter in the wizarding world.
