Red Carpet Fiction: The Met Gala Scene from The Devil Wears Prada 2

As The Devil Wears Prada 2 begins its highly anticipated return, one scene already commands attention beyond the script. A fictional Met Gala held inside New York’s American Museum of Natural History becomes the film’s central fashion moment. The sequence revives the franchise’s legacy of editorial storytelling through style, with Meryl Streep, Simone Ashley, and Stanley Tucci dressed in sharply conceived couture under the direction of costume designer Molly Rogers.

Meryl Streep, returning as Miranda Priestly, appears in a voluminous red taffeta gown that reflects the sculptural elegance of high fashion. The dress features a single long sleeve, an architectural collar, and a full sweeping skirt. Paired with deep red lips, smokey eyes, and ruby jewelry, the look reaffirms Priestly’s iconic presence and command of visual authority.

Simone Ashley enters the story with a more modern sensibility. Her black gown is minimalist yet intricate, with sheer mesh panels across the bodice and a rhinestone-embellished neckline. Paired with crystal-studded tights, a compact evening bag, and refined styling, the look feels editorial yet sharply personal. It suggests a character both aware of the codes of fashion and unafraid to shape them.

Ashley was also seen in another key look earlier in the shoot. A tapestry-print dress by Monse, previously worn by Taylor Swift, was reinterpreted for the film with a crisp white shirt, knee-high socks, and Giuseppe Zanotti heels. The styling recontextualizes the archival print, positioning her character as someone grounded in both legacy and reinvention.

Stanley Tucci, reprising his role as Nigel, offers a masterclass in tailored restraint. His tuxedo is styled with a crisp white shirt, a bold polka-dot bowtie, and an oversized black and white scarf. The look reads as classic with subtle eccentricity, perfectly aligned with Nigel’s role as Miranda’s reliable but style-forward confidant.

Costume designer Molly Rogers leads the wardrobe direction for the sequel. A longtime collaborator of Patricia Field, Rogers honors the spirit of the original film while evolving its aesthetic for contemporary storytelling. The fashion credits include pieces from Lanvin, Max Mara, Dior, Monse, and emerging label Sa Su Phi.

In this next chapter of The Devil Wears Prada, fashion is the language in which the story is told. Miranda’s red gown, Simone’s sleek black silhouette, Nigel’s polished eveningwear, all are visual signatures that define hierarchy, challenge norms, and move the characters forward. Under Rogers’s direction, the wardrobe does what only great costume design can do!
