Inside Dakota Johnson’s Very Los Angeles Home

Today, we’re stepping inside the Los Angeles home of Dakota Johnson, the Hollywood actress best known for Fifty Shades of Grey. When we think of celebrity homes in LA, the usual picture is something grand: enormous rooms, a dramatic pool, expensive finishes and interiors designed to impress. Johnson’s home is almost the opposite.

Built in 1947, the house was designed by architect Carl Maston for himself and his wife. Hidden at the end of a quiet street and surrounded by greenery, it is a relatively intimate example of California midcentury modernism, with warm wood, concrete, large windows and an architecture that feels closely connected to the garden outside.

Johnson has described the house as “a treehouse on a boat,” and once you see it, the comparison begins to make sense. The rooms seem to sit among the trees, while the living spaces open toward a long lap pool and garden. There is very little of the polished mansion aesthetic usually associated with Hollywood. Instead, the house feels private, slightly eccentric and genuinely lived in.

Maston belonged to the same generation of Los Angeles modernists as John Lautner and Richard Neutra, and the original architecture remains an important part of the house today. Johnson did not try to modernize it beyond recognition. Instead, she worked with Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward of Pierce & Ward to bring her own personality into the space.

Rather than filling the house with perfectly matched designer furniture, Johnson chose a mix of vintage pieces, Persian rugs, rattan, velvet, old lamps and objects collected over time. There is plenty of midcentury design, but also a strong 1970s influence and enough color to keep everything from feeling overly serious.

Wood appears throughout the house, from the living room and office to the bedroom ceiling. Against it are olive green, mustard, red, orange and pale pink, creating a palette that feels warm without becoming too decorative.

The kitchen is one of the most recognizable rooms. By Hollywood standards, it is surprisingly small, but the olive-green cabinetry, warm wood and patterned rug give it more character than many oversized marble kitchens. It is practical, colorful and completely connected to the mood of the rest of the house.

The same approach continues in the bathroom. Concrete floors and large windows preserve the modernist character of the architecture, while brass and glass fixtures add warmth. The custom vanities are painted a soft dusty pink, an unexpected detail that works particularly well against the harder materials around them.

What makes Dakota Johnson’s home interesting is precisely this balance. It has architectural pedigree without feeling like a museum, and beautiful interiors without looking as though nobody is allowed to touch anything.
In a city famous for extravagant celebrity houses, this one feels refreshingly different.
